Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
